Though Duke Nuken: Forever eventually crawled out of its borderline 15-year development cycle with Final Fantasy XV and The Last Guardian finally seeing the light of day, the last big-name game to survive the looming threat of 'vaporware' is Prey - and it'll prove itself during The Game Awards tomorrow night.
Prey 2 was originally announced shortly after the release of Prey - an early shooter title for Windows and Xbox 360. Mentioned by 3D Realms - the folks behind the title to survive the vaporware chamber for the longest time - work eventually started with Human Head Studios when 3D Realms began to break apart.
With Human Head Studios' vision of Prey 2 making it to consumer event shows and progressing to a near alpha state, the company eventually cancelled the title for unspecified reasons, leaving its then owner - Bethesda - with nothing to show for their IP purchase. Officially scrapping the game in 2014 after 3 years of silence, Bethesda waited until 2016 to formally announce the rebooted 'Prey' under development at Arkane Studios.
It's been a confusing 10 years for the proposed Prey franchise. Get up to speed here.
So with its promised 2017 release getting closer by the day, it's finally time to have a good look at what's going on the re-handled Prey universe. Though Bethesda took to events like Gamescom to show tidbits of footage alongside Dishonored 2, with Arkane's stealth title finally up on store shelves, they'll certainly be focusing their efforts on selling us Arkane Studio's survival horror take on the alien shooter.
There's no definite date in mind when it comes to Bethesda's CryEngine-powered re-imagining of the 2006 classic, but rest assured you'll be absorbing some alien powers at some point next year. The Game Awards starts up at 17:30 PST, so we're looking at around 02:30 for most of Europe.
