Somehow, Beyond Good & Evil 2 returned. While we’ve heard over and over again Ubisoft is still working on the open-world action-adventure game, it’s been hard to believe the sequel (actually prequel) to the 2003 cult classic is ever coming out. Now, the French company is hiring for several positions again.
Though plans for a follow-up to the original were a thing in the late 2000s, the project underwent a creative refresh as Michael Ancel, its original director, tried to juggle the Rayman franchise and other side projects. It was in 2017 that we got a first look at the vision for the game, which was still far away from becoming a cohesive project.
Updates since then have been irregular, with buzz around the game dying down in the post-pandemic era, especially after Ancel departed the project and the games industry. At this point, Beyond Good & Evil 2 is more of a legend in the vein of Half-Life 3. Officially, Ubisoft remains committed to it, but with everything going on and the Western games industry being in a tough position (with Ubisoft specifically facing many difficulties), it’s not surprising that most people don’t have high hopes for it.
Now, fresh post listings for Technical Sound Designer and Lead Quest Designer (among others) at Ubisoft Montpellier are explicitly pointing at Beyond Good & Evil 2 receiving a major bump in its development. At the very least, Ubisoft is still putting money into the game, yet chances are it’s gone through more creative shakeups after so long and following Ancel’s departure. Will we see it again soon? We honestly don’t know, but it’s significant that the French publisher isn’t keeping its continued existence a secret.
Back in 2024, Ubisoft also reminded everyone of the first Beyond Good & Evil’s 20th anniversary with a remaster, so the powers that be certainly see some value in the IP even as the publisher doubles down even harder on Assassin’s Creed and other reliable franchises.
