It’s safe to say Larian Studios’ Divinity was one of the biggest reveals that happened at last week’s Game Awards ceremony. Its long cinematic teaser left us with more questions than answers, however, so now creative director Swen Vincke is clearing up some misconceptions.
While many of us expected Larian to go silent following the dark reveal trailer, the developers are already answering some of our biggest questions, with Vincke leading the charge.
What about the title? Why is it just Divinity? No previous game in the Divinity series had a one-word title. Does this mean it’s going to reboot the long-running RPG series for a post-Baldur’s Gate 3 audience?
Not at all. “This game is going to be set after a big event from a previous game, so things that happened in the past have happened. They helped shape the world, but there’s a new dawn, there’s a new time coming. We wanted to show that we have a more grounded universe, so that was in there,” the director told VGC during a recent chat.
The comment and casual confirmation this new Divinity exists inside the previous (and only) continuity of the universe came after he was asked about the shockingly grim tone of the teaser when compared to the studio’s past works. “It’s an interesting thing, because if you take Original Sin 2, and you made it cinematic, that is what you would see, so it’s very on-brand, actually,” he explained.
The entire conversation is well worth a full read, as it goes in-depth on the studio’s post-BG3 views and its ambitions as everyone tries to top an era-defining, crowd-pleasing RPG success. Vincke also says it might be a while before we see gameplay, but underlines it’s “the next thing we want to show you.”
Elsewhere, while chatting with Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, the Larian CEO has revealed developers are now using “AI tools to explore ideas, flesh out PowerPoint presentations, develop concept art and write placeholder text.” However, he’s been quick to promise no AI-generated content will be in the final game. Make of that what you will.
