Ether One developer White Paper Games today unveiled I Am Ripper as its next adventure thriller game. Set in 1988, the title follows detective Samathna Harlow as she investigates a series of gruesome murders that disturb the peace of a small north-western British dock town.
As we step in to help the forensic investigator track down the person responsible, we’ll face “horrific circumstances forcing [us] to choose a path.” These decisions come with consequences for someone in the town, but just whose lives we affect isn’t immediately obvious.
British Thriller I Am Ripper Announced
“I Am Ripper builds upon everything we’ve learnt about story delivery, tactile gameplay and meaningful consequence,” the developer said in an emailed press release.
“It’s not a puzzle game, or a horror game, or a detective game, but it has all the key components of those genres to create something that feels rewarding, explorative of core themes and characters that feel real and grounded in their world.”
The title launches with a series of branching narratives, which could mean that some degree of replayability is likely involved.
The announcement trailer also shines the spotlight on a few sequences of what the developer describes as “tactile gameplay,” during which we have to cut stitches and remove evidence from the corpse of a victim.
Needless to say, I Am Ripper’s thick, gloomy atmosphere is obvious from the trailer itself, which does warn that it features scenes of drowning, death, and body mutilation. Although what we’ve seen so far looks fairly grounded, this might not be a story for the faint of heart.
I Am Ripper’s announcement did not reveal its release date just yet, but we do know that the game is set to launch on PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Gog.com.
