Hitman 3 and the complete World of Assassination trilogy, which is being updated with new content to this day, are widely seen as modern masterpieces, so it’s often we wonder about the future of the IP as IO Interactive prepares to launch 007: First Light next year. Now, CEO Hakan Abrak has answered a few burning questions.
The updates dropped on December 1 via Variety’s chat with the head of IO Interactive; it was timed with a new collaboration in-game with real-life icon Eminem. While the most of IO’s focus is now put on the upcoming AAA 007 game (which looks great so far) and the untitled ‘Project Fantasy’ that’s been in dev for a while now, it appears the developer already has specific plans for Agent 47’s future.
Abrak didn’t dodge the question about a fourth Hitman which builds on the extremely strong base of World of Assassination: “So of course there will be more Hitman… But right now, I think we need to get to the other side of this year and next year you’ll get more news about Hitman co-op, because I think co-op is a really, really good extension to the universe, and will introduce very interesting mechanics and combinations in World of Assassination. But we will, after that, be talking about the next Hitman — because, of course, there’s going to be a next Hitman.”
Though the press and fans shouldn’t consider this an official announcement (nothing’s set in stone until we get a teaser of some sort), it’s rare to hear a CEO openly state what a huge IP’s future will look like before the company has gotten another big release out of the way first. We’re of the opinion a co-op mode (an addition as massive as the roguelite Freelancer mode that was released a while back) could keep WoA going for even more years, but we won’t say no to a new chapter in Agent 47’s long-running history.
A release window beyond “at some point of 2026” sadly hasn’t been provided yet for Hitman: World of Assassination’s co-op mode, but now we know we can expect some sort of proper reveal of the next Hitman game shortly afterwards. That’s refreshing in the age of secrets and inevitable leaks.
