If you’ve been asking for a new Magicka or the old Westwood Studios classic Nox for years, you’ll have to keep waiting, but Glaurune might be the next best thing and a multiplayer-oriented evolution of the formula.
This new action-RPG with PvP and PvE modes comes from Nachtgiger Software, who promises a clash of spells and steel (but mostly spells) in fast-paced battles which take place in reactive environments. That’s why an in-game level editor is in the works too. And yes, you’ll be able to customize your character’s looks and style too.
In spite of the strong focus on multiplayer, there’s also a “flexible attribute system” with mix-and-match elements that allows players to blend a number of play styles instead of being stuck as flat and traditional Wizard, Warrior, and Rogue archetypes. While we can tell magic is at the center of Glaurune, the official description also promises enough weapon-swinging and trap-setting to please players looking to defeat their enemies with more than spells which are the product of mixing different elements (with explosive results), like in the Magicka series.
For now, we know capture-the-flag and arena modes will be available at launch, whether you choose to play against AI opponents or online. More importantly, all players will be able to host their own custom games, which could instantly level Glaurune’s ‘niche community’ potential up when mixed with custom maps.
Glaurune will be coming to PC (Steam) in the near future, but we don’t have a firm release window yet.
