In a new quarterly interim report, Starbreeze CEO Adolf Kristjansson provided an update on its game based on the Dungeons and Dragons IP, Codenamed Project Baxter. The game is currently in development and due to be released in 2026 using Unreal Engine 5.
While details on the project are relatively slim, we know it’s in development for the PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series. When it was first revealed in 2023, it was described as a “co-operative multiplayer, lifetime commitment through a Games as a Service-model, [and] community engagement.”

In today’s Interim report, Kristjansson provided an update on Project Baxter’s progress and revealed plans to include the player community in development to gather feedback so it can deliver the “best possible player experience”.
“Internal playtesting continues to inform improvements, and our ambition is to involve our player community in development to ensure the best possible player experience.” said Kristjansson. “Our vision remains clear: to create a unique, immersive, co-op game, where player choice is central.”
“The team’s primary focus right now is on delivering a strong vertical slice to showcase their product development progress.”

“Baxter” is Starbreeze next internal project. Set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons®, the game will feature the signature game cornerstones of Starbreeze’ productions; co-operative multiplayer, lifetime commitment through a Games as a Service-model, community engagement and a larger than life experience. Project Baxter is set to launch on all major platforms in 2026 and will be produced in Unreal Engine 5. Stay tuned for more updates!
Starbreeze has made several changes since Kristjansson took over as CEO in March 2025. It has a renewed roadmap and development focus on the PayDay franchise, having just acquired the rights to PayDay 3 from Embracer Group-owned PLAION on May 6th.
