Relic Entertainment Head of Design Philippe Boulle has spoken about the developer’s efforts to support Company of Heroes 3, the latest entry in its World War II-themed real-time strategy game series, following its rather troubled launch on the ninth episode of Slitherine’s The Hot Seat show.
The highly-anticipated RTS had a lot of buzz surrounding it at release, but several issues soured a part of its community on the experience. Rather than giving up, the developer stuck with the title, delivering a slew of free post-launch updates designed to improve different aspects of the divisive third entry alongside premium DLC that expands upon its playable battlegroups.
Relic Entertainment’s Phillippe Boulle Discusses Company of Heroes 3 and More on The Hot Seat
“I feel a sense of responsibility to the fans and the audiences who play them…the people who shell out their money to play the games,” he told host Marco Minoli.
“We’re not going to be able to solve everything quickly, but we can work progressively, build on it, and get to a place where the game really feels like the sequel the fans expect,” he added.
Rather than being laser-focused on Company of Heroes 3, the chat delves into much more, including Boulle’s role at Relic, his relationship with the projects he’s involved in, and the fans of the studio’s work, providing a rather insightful look into the world of real-time strategy game development.
Although we reviewed it positively, Company of Heroes 3’s launch proved rather rocky, with players raising up concerns about both its single-player campaign and the passivity of its AI as well as different elements of its multiplayer component.
Relic Entertainment began addressing them early on and hasn’t really stopped, gradually improving the game while releasing several pieces of premium DLC.
After a long stretch of time under publisher Sega, the developer also regained its independence in 2024.
Aside from continuing work on Company of Heroes 3, it also released the smaller turn-based strategy game Earth vs Mars while surprising us with a refreshed version of one of its classic real-time strategy games in the shape of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Definitive Edition.
