The pre-Game Awards rumor mill is heating up as the week progresses. We were just talking about Leon S. Kennedy showing up in Resident Evil Requiem, and now we could be looking at confirmation the next Total War release is WH40K-themed.
After last week’s Total War 25th Anniversary Showcase, fans have been celebrating the return of the Medieval series as the next big historical title from Creative Assembly, but we were also told the next Total War game (as in the next one being released) was set to be announced at this year’s Game Awards show, marking “a new era” for the long-running franchise.
Two options instantly came to mind: Rumors of a Star Wars-themed Total War have been making noise for quite a while now, but the more logical choice, especially after the big three-game success of Warhammer Fantasy, always was to keep the collaboration with Games Workshop going, moving on to adapt the even bigger Warhammer 40,000 universe next.
Now, eagle-eyed fans on Reddit might have cracked the case ahead of this week’s reveal. They’re pointing out the official Anniversary Showcase video was hiding clues in plain sight for anyone who was bored enough to slowly go through the frames that gave us quick looks at the developers’ computer screens.
As explained in the post, blink-and-you-will-miss-them frames show file structures/folders with the “40k” label used several times. Moreover, three “fleet action” files are also seen in the open. If we only had the latter, we could still discuss about the possibility of it still being Star Wars, but the “40k” label should put discussions to rest… unless you think we’re being misled.
In any case, we only have two more days to wait now, and considering how huge of a deal the Anniversary Showcase video made the franchise’s next engine jump to be, sci-fi warfare heavy in ranged weapons, big magic, vehicles, and even huge spaceships would justify a major refresh of the tech.
