Towerborne, the upcoming side-scrolling action-RPG brawler from The Banner Saga developer Stoic, will officially leave early access in late February, moving away from the free-to-play model it launched with when its 1.0 update goes live.
During its early access stint, Towerborne was envisioned as a free-to-play, always online title that came with the expected assortment of microtransactions and monetization methods to support it. When it fully launches next month, it will instead be available as a premium game that supports both offline and online play.
Towerborne Leaves Early Access, Moves Away from Free-to-Play Model
“With this full game update, Towerborne shifts from its original vision as a free-to-play, always online title into a buy once, offline game – you will own the complete experience permanently, with offline play and online co-op,” reads an Xbox Wire article dedicated to the action-RPG’s full release.
“This change required deep structural rebuilding over the past year, transforming systems originally designed around constant connectivity. The result is a stronger, more accessible, and more player-friendly version of Towerborne — one we’re incredibly proud to bring to launch.”
Towerborne’s meaty 1.0 update wraps up its story, treating us to a full narrative arc, a showdown with its big bad, new side quests, and an overhauled Bounty Board.
More enemies are also on the way, alongside a fully reworked difficulty system. The world map has also been reimagined, while growing thanks to a brand new coastal biome.
Furthermore, we’ll have new gear and abilities to chase in Towerborne’s 1.0 update, alongside a new Forge system that allows us “to modify, upgrade, and re-roll stats.”
On top of that, a handful of quality of life additions are planned, while all the available cosmetics and “a ton” of new ones will be obtainable through gameplay without the need to purchase them using premium currency.
Towerborne’s 1.0 update is slated to go live on February 26, 2026, when the side-scrolling action-RPG brawler’s full version becomes available across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Its Standard Edition will cost $24.99 or your regional equivalent, while the Deluxe Edition sets us back $29.99.
