Publisher and developer Owlcat Games has shared a new batch of Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy alpha screenshots, giving us our first look at the detective system’s mind map while showing off some more of the upcoming RPG’s environments, party members, and combat scenes.
Although it’s very clearly built on the foundations set in place by its predecessor, Rogue Trader, Dark Heresy takes things in a different direction, putting us in the role of an acolyte of the Inquisition operating in the Calixis Sector.
New Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy Alpha Screenshots
The title’s deep investigation system promises a hefty amount of freedom in how we approach discovering the truth. The detective mode mind map shared as part of Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy’s newest batch of alpha screenshots shows some fairly intricate connections between the different clues and elements that make up one of the cases we’ll experience.
Exploring the game’s environments seems to include more verticality now, handy green arrows signaling available paths. Turn-based battles are also part of the package, this time around bringing some key differences when compared to Rogue Trader.
Although the two games share the setup phase preceding battles – during which we can position our party members –, Dark Heresy includes what appear to effectively be two health bars while also allowing us to target individual body parts, which could add more depth to the system.
Dark Heresy’s UI shares stylistic similarities with Rogue Trader’s, but layout differences help set it apart. The upcoming RPG’s environments and character models also look more polished.
It is, naturally, worth keeping in mind that what we see here is the game in its early stages of development, and things can and will likely change by the time it fully releases.
Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy’s alpha version becomes playable on December 16 for all Founders who purchase either the $79 Developers Digital Pack tier or the $289 Collector’s Edition on the Owlcat Games website.
