Valve has decided not to hold its annual Halloween event for Team Fortress 2, concentrating instead on a major update featuring new maps, cosmetics and a new campaign, that it hopes will be out by the end of the year.

Instead of releasing the traditional horror-themed map, the studio is turning to the community for this year's celebrations, spotlighting the best custom content.

Film production company Bad Robot, currently putting the finishing touches on Star Wars: Episode VII, has teamed up with Valve and Escalation Studios to create a new game mode for Team Fortress 2.

Yes, that is rather an odd development, isn't it? Called Pass Time, the new mode is essentially a spin on American Football, with both teams trying to grab a ball from the centre of the map and touch it down in the opponent's area. It's currently in Beta, and you can test it out by selecting 'Play Beta Maps' in TF2's menu.

Mod team converts Team Fortress 2 into Nintendo's kid-friendly shooter Splatoon

In an alpha gameplay trailer you can see a version of Splatoon's 'Port Mackerel' map, as well as several player and weapon models taken straight from the Wii U game. I'm not sure Nintendo will be all that thrilled about that, but nothing's been taken down yet.

There's another big eam Fortress 2 update on the way tomorrow, and it's packed full of new toys with which to commit unspeakable acts of violence against your fellow man.

The Gun Mettle Campaign Pass will set you back $6.99, and assigns you two skill-based contracts each week until the campaign is over. Fulfilling these contracts will net you one of several unique weapons with player-specific paintjobs, from pink miniguns to tartan pistols.

The house that Gabe built, as it turns out, is none too pleased with the state of their service support.

Assigned an 'F' rating from the Better Business Bureau, an American non-governmental, non-regulatory and non-profit organisation, it's clear in Valve's response that the 'F' doesn't stand for 'Fabulous'.
