MOBAs are notoriously tricky to get into, which is why Blizzard’s doing its best to make its cross-IP effort Heroes of the Storm a little less intimidating to beginners.
Step one comes in the latest update, which tweaks the matchmaking rules to take the number of Quick Match games played into account when assigning teams. It should mean that teams feel more balanced and fair, but it’s not going to complete solve the issue.
”The new rule will not prevent all instances in which new players can be matched with veterans” Blizzard warns. ”As an example, this can still occur when a party’s members have mixed levels of Heroes of the Storm experience. Additionally, this change may result in increased Quick Match queue times as the matchmaker searches for players with a similar number of games played to your own.”
The studio promises to keep working on matchmaking, listening to feedback and monitoring the data. Blizzard’s always positioned Heroes of the Storm as a slightly more newbie-friendly experience than games like League of Legends and DotA 2; there’s no last-hitting, no item purchasing, and all skills are unlocked at the start of a match, meaning the game concentrates on action more than character building.
