Diablo 5 items are inspired by Diablo 2 and its Resurrected remaster, with the developers promising an emphasis on items that feel "readable, memorable, and worth chasing across hundreds of hours".
Blizzard is also bringing back inventory optimisation, meaning larger items will take up more slots. This might signal a shift away from the "loot shower" that usually results in most items being scrapped for components or sold.
Gear-based sets and stats requirements are also key parts of the approach to items in Diablo 5. While the developers haven't gone deep into how it all works yet (as the game is still far from release), we know Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred's approach to crafting will partially shape equipment creation in D5. That said, runes and runewords will be inspired by Diablo 2.
