Fable’s release date finally puts the long-awaited reboot of Lionhead Studios’ legendary open-world action-RPG in our hands, giving us the freedom to explore Albion as envisioned by developer Playground Games while facing off against bandits, fire-breathing chickens, and much more. Below, we break down everything known so far about Fable’s release window, supported platforms, gameplay details, trailers, and the latest updates from the developers.
The rebooted Fable aims to stay true to the spirit of the original trilogy, down to starting us off as a child destined to become a hero whose powers awaken as tragedy strikes. We’ll freely explore idyllic hills, dark forests, as well as walk through “oversized vegetable patches” and other locations, some more dangerous than others.
Fable Release Date
Fable’s release date was initially slated to occur in autum 2026 before publisher Xbox Game Studios announced it would be delayed until February 2027, in an effort to avoid overcrowding its schedule for the end of the year while also dodging Grand Theft Auto VI’s launch.
- Fable Release Date: February 2027
Fable Gameplay
Before setting off to explore the handcrafted world of Albion, we’ll customize our hero. In combat, we can rely on ranged and melee weaponry as well as magical abilities that we can freely mix to deal with different encounters.
We’ll encounter familiar foes like hobbes, balverines, hollow folk, and trolls, alongside several new ones, including a fire-breathing chicken. Enemies have various weaknesses that we can exploit.
Although combat is an important pillar of Fable’s gameplay, the reboot also allows us to buy homes, engage in jobs like blacksmithing to earn extra coin, as well as pursue romances, marry NPCs, have children, and purchase businesses.
Albion is home to “more than 1,000 unique NPCs,” according to the developer, each of which has a routine, role, and personality.
Our hero’s morality continues to be a major part of how we leave our mark on the world. This time around, however, it isn’t black and white, having “lots of grey areas” and being “subjective.”
Our actions earn us a reputation, but different people react differently to what we do. Some of these decisions also significantly impact the world.
One example given by the developer revolves around choosing whether to spare or kill a farmer who accidentally turns himself into a giant. The latter path results in his massive corpse “lying on the farmland outside of town for the rest of the game,” affecting house prices.
Fable Story
Fable’s story sees us exploring and likely saving the world of Albion once more, following our hero’s footsteps since their time as a child, much like the original game did. Approaching morality from a less polarized standpoint, the title will introduce us to a bevy of NPCs and creatures, some more whimsical than others, whose destinies we’ll inevitably impact.
