Epic’s Mark Rein says their Unreal Engine is the ”unofficial” choice for Natal thanks to Microsoft using it with development teams behind motion tech demos and titles.
They consider themselves the ”economic engine” of Natal, so studios looking to profit from the motion platform should ”come talk to” Epic. Spectacular results in ”very short period”.
”So obviously Microsoft has a new studio that is making games for Natal, and it’s using Unreal Engine 3,” VP Mark Vein told OXM in an interview. ”The great part of all this is that it has extended the engine to do the mapping of Avatars, the animation system - all the good stuff that’s there.”
”So the nice thing is, we are going to work with Microsoft to make that available to Unreal Engine licensees who want to make Natal games,” he added. Epic have profited handsomely from their Unreal Engines over the years, but have faced growing competition.
”So, if you want to make a game on Natal, you want to get a big head-start and use the same tech as Microsoft, come talk to me,” he said.
”We are the unofficial engine of Natal, or maybe the official, I don’t know. In other words, we consider ourselves the ‘economic engine of Natal’. You want to make money with Natal, come talk to us, we’ll help you.” Epic are investigating Natal for use in future games.
