Guitar Hero and Rock Band have been duelling instruments for a while, but latest NPD figures show World Tour has managed to smash a lot more hotel rooms.
Last year Guitar Hero World Tour sold 3.4 million copies in the US where Rock Band 2 managed half that at 1.7 million. Staggered release dates and install base all factors.
Whereas Guitar Hero released simultaneously across all its platforms, Rock Band 2 came in stages which hindered sales. Activision's World Tour also enjoys a greater fan following with the Guitar Hero name with Rock Band stilling trying to prove itself.
Rock Band 2 hit Xbox 360 on September 14th, then PS3 on October 14th and finally Wii and PS2 on December 18th. Guitar Hero World Tour launched on all platforms October 19th.
Both games were welcomed with high praise from critics, so it seems release schedule was more likely the undoing of the Rock Band name in 2008.
