The Deus Ex: Human Evolution studio has a special team dedicated to working on the first ever multiplayer treatment for the Tomb Raider series. Guardian of Light ‘opened the door’.
Crystal was able to use their digital co-op title Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light to experiment with Lady Croft without jeopardising Tomb Raider; it was their ”Pixar short.”
It brought Lara fans together, claims the studio’s Karl Stewart, and let them understand networking and co-op play. They chose to bring Eidos Montreal on board so their main team wasn’t divided. The world they created with the new Tomb Raider was too good to just use for single player, and fans enjoyed raiding tombs together in Guardian of Light.
Survival and traversal are the two main things brought over from the single player portion of the game. We’re teased that booby traps will play a significant role in taking out other players. Zac Levi is even a playable multiplayer character having shamelessly demanded he be able to ‘play with himself digitally’. Nerd.
Tomb Raider releases on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC March 5th.
