Survival title Midwinter, one of the pioneers of the open world game, is coming to PC next year in a new HD version.
The re-mastered version is being created by Chilli Hugger Software, who are working with original programmer Dave Gautrey on the project. It also comes with the full support from the estate of Mike Singleton, the game’s designer, who sadly passed away last October.
Midwinter takes place on the titular island in 2099, with the world in the middle of an apocalyptic new ice age. As Captain John Stark, players must defend the isle of Midwinter from an invading force lead by a despotic General.
In a statement issued to Eurogamer, creative lead Dan Whitehead said, ”Midwinter was a seminal game, and a huge influence on the open world sandbox genre, but Mike’s vision was held back by the technology of the time. Our aim is to bring Midwinter back into the modern gaming environment, combining the depth and variety of the original with today’s cutting edge visuals and processing power. The goal is not to merely remake the game, but to fully realise Mike’s ambitious design without the limitations of 16-bit hardware.”
There’s going to be a Kickstarter campaign in early 2014, with the full release currently planned for 2015.
