Side-scrolling action game Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China is set to be released as part of the Assassin’s Creed: Unity Season Pass, and it won’t be the last Chronicles title if Ubisoft’s Alex Amancio is to be believed.
Talking to Eurogamer, Amancio said; “We really liked the side-scrolling idea, like Mark of the Ninja, and we thought it would be a really great way to explore some of the other universes we’ve created.”
Chronicles: China stars Chinese assassin Shao Jun, who’s popped up in the franchise’s expanded universe before. Most notably in animated movie Embers, where she bumped into fellow order member Ezio.
“One thing that’s really cool is that every one of the chapters of this game will be in the art style representative of that era in time,” Amancio continued. “This is why Shao Jun’s game is like Chinese ink - very black and red. Once we have other characters and timeframes the art style will completely change to match that specific character.”
Might be a good way for Ubisoft to address the barrage of requests it gets for Assassin’s Creed tales set in specific time periods. Amancio wasn’t totally clear on what form subsequent releases might take, but he seemed to suggest that the developer has some fairly concrete plans.
“I don’t want to spoil the surprise,” he teased, “but the idea is that we have this rich universe - we’re going to use it.”
