The first expansion pack for Guild Wars 2 is called Heart of Thorns. Announced during PAX South, the expansion follows the core game’s Living World storyline over to Maguuma Jungle, where big bad dragon Mordremoth is up to no good.
Heart of Thorns will also add a new ‘Mastery’ system for taking your character beyond level 80, and a brand new profession, the Revenant.
Revenants are “heavily armored and equipped with the otherworldly powers of the Mists”, and appear to enjoy blindfolding themselves. Don’t know what that’s about. It’s not just the new guys that get some love – the game’s core professions will each get to unlock a new weapon, and will be able to access new traits, skills, and mechanics.
The Mastery system sounds interesting, allowing players to “master abilities like hang gliding in the jungle, tearing the bark off of heavily armored Mordrem, or building new collections that earn precursors to a legendary weapon.”
New Guild Halls will offer a place for your group to call home, and a new Stronghold PVP mode sees two teams try to conquer each other’s base of operations. Rounding things off is the new Borderlands World vs World map, which promises “treacherous heights with traps that blow your foes to the depths below and ferocious defenders to help keep the enemy at bay”.
In short, a whole bunch of new content to keep you busy. No news on a release date yet, but developer ArenaNet says players can expect more info soon. For more on the expansion, head over to the official website.
