Sony has announced that Playstation 4’s 3.50 firmware will be available as of tomorrow, including support for remote play on computers.
The update will allow you to stream PS4 games from console to computer, if you’ve got the required bandwidth. It will work on both Windows 8.1/10 or later, as well as OS X 10.10 and 10.11. Resolution options include 360p, 540p, and 720p, with framerate options of 30 and 60 FPS, though the default is 540p 30.
Those numbers are super unimpressive to me, and I doubt it’s going to be of much interest to folks who primarily play on PC, where they’re seeing superior versions of most of the same games. Maybe if a household member is monopolizing the TV? Or you’re stuck in an airport with a laptop? I dunno, even then that default resolution barely sounds playable.
More interesting is the fact that the update will let you plug in a DualShock 4 via USB to play remote games, and I hope this means that we’re finally getting native PC drivers for the controller, which has previously relied on third-party solutions.
