The future of VR just got significantly brighter. One of the biggest criticisms we’ve heard about VR is the lack of support from big developers. If you buy an HTC Vive or Oculus Rift, you can expect to play a lot of new and innovative indie games, but some people just want to play AAA titles. Well, thanks to Bethesda, there’s going to be plenty to try out next year, specifically Fallout 4 VR.
Now we know what you may be thinking: is it just a small segment of Fallout 4 or is it the full game? Todd Howard, Director and Executive Producer at Bethesda Game Studios, confirmed on Twitch.TV that this will be the complete version of Fallout 4.
In addition to Fallout 4 making its way on to the HTC Vive, Bethesda also announced a Doom experience that allows players to explore Hell. Though there hasn’t been any confirmation, the wording of this Doom experience makes it sound like it will be a short segment. We can’t imagine Bethesda will want to release a very fast shooter like Doom on a VR headset, as the amount of movement would be enough to make most people feel sick.
“We think the greatest promise of VR is its ability to immerse players completely into virtual worlds, and that the best games for that experience will be first person open world RPGs… so we have Fallout 4 for you to play as well,” said Vice President of Bethesda, Pete Hines. “Wander the wasteland, check out the iconic Red Rocket, try combat. I’m telling you, with a Pipboy on your arm, a dog by your side, a gun in your hand… it’s pretty incredible.”
Hines confirmed Bethesda’s commitment to VR with his closing statement: “We want to give you a glimpse of where we are heading with VR, where you can expect us to remain a leader, offering our games on the very best platforms you choose.” We will assume that some of Bethesda’s future games will be on VR platforms, which is great news for early adopters and people who plan to pick up a headset later.
