Although December is slowly coming to an end, announcement season lingers on for a bit longer. Team Cherry has unveiled Hollow Knight: Silksong’s upcoming Sea of Sorrow expansion while celebrating the sequel passing seven million copies sold in its first three months.
Hollow Knight: Silksong’s Sea of Sorrow expansion is, unsurprisingly, a nautically-themed addition to the popular metroidvania title that will be free for all existing owners when it launches in 2026.
Hollow Knight: Silksong - Sea of Sorrow Expansion Announced
It promises “new areas, bosses, tools, and more,” although publisher and developer Team Cherry is keeping specific details under wraps, opting to share more “shortly before” the expansion launches.
Free post-launch expansions also kept players regularly returning to the first game in the series, so it’s great to learn that the sequel might receive a similar treatment.
Easily one of the most anticipated games of 2025, Hollow Knight: Silksong’s launch saw enough determined clicks from players trying to secure a copy that it crashed storefronts, so the news that it sold seven million copies in the first three months doesn’t necessarily come as a surprise.
The number is, however, more impressive when you take into account the fact that Silksong was also available on Xbox and PC Game Pass on day one, which introduced “millions more” players to its mysterious world and challenging combat, according to the developer.
Funnily enough, claiming the sequel on Game Pass could also prove tricky during the first days.
If its predecessor is anything to go by, we can probably expect more updates and expansions for Hollow Knight: Silksong further down the line.
For now, Team Cherry is hacking away at next year’s Sea of Sorrow expansion, whose teaser trailer you can watch below.
