If you’re looking for a fast-paced, cutesy RTS which plays well with a controller, you should keep an eye on Jelly Troops.
Developer Nukenin, who previously developed Godzilla Voxel Wars for Toho, is describing Jelly Troops as a condensation of “the RTS genre down to its purest form, where positioning, quick thinking, and on-the-fly adjustments are the key to victory.” Of course, the main twist is the cartoony, easy-to-read aesthetic and its controller-friendly approach to army control that kind of reminds us of the Overlord series.
In fact, while Jelly Troops is currently set to release on Steam on September 17, the latest trailer (which you can watch below) is also confirming a Nintendo Switch launch at a later date, with cross-platform multiplayer secured.
The goal in Jelly Troops is simple: Capturing more flags than your opponent in “hyper-fast, best-of-3 RTS battles,” whether it’s vs. the AI or humans in both local (split-screen) and online modes. If you ask us, it’s looking like a potentially amazing ‘party game’ with an old-school flavor.
Slimes can harvest ‘magic fruits’ that allow them to damage other slimes, grow in size, or gain extra abilities. Moreover, Guardians roam the maps, making them scarier to navigate. This is combined with wall-building to force your opponents to find new paths around the map, and spellcasting, which can turn battles upside down. It’s a conceptually simple game full of fun little tools and gameplay twists, which may be exactly what many of us are looking for after far bigger and deeper RTS releases this year.
You can download the Jelly Troops demo right now on Steam. We haven’t received word yet on the pricing plans for this brave little RTS, though, so be sure to wishlist it if you’re curious.
