Bungie’s extraction shooter Marathon is out and enchanting most players who made the trip to Tau Ceti IV, but there are concerns about its wider appeal. We’ve looked into Marathon’s player count and current sales numbers, and this is where things sit right now.

Marathon Player Count on PC and Consoles
At the time of writing, we don’t have numbers that reliably point to Marathon’s concurrent players on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. However, we have full access to its evolution on Steam, where it’s managed to truly convince 90% of players (with Very Positive reviews overall) who bought into it.

Marathon Units Sold
While we don’t have the full picture, especially when it comes to Marathon copies sold on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, reports have given us a bit of a feeling of how Bungie’s latest game is performing during its early days.
Following the late February to early March Server Slam, the game got as high as the top 2 spot on Steam’s top sellers list, which reportedly led to around 250,000 copies being sold on Steam alone before the game launched on March 5, 2026.
Specialised site Gamalytic, at the time of writing, points to the game having sold roughly 828,000 copies on Steam. There’s been rumours of the game’s current total nearing 2 million units across all platforms, but solid sources backing up such claims haven’t appeared, so we’re playing the waiting game for now.
In any case, Marathon’s biggest obstacle to massive success is its likely huge production budget and more niche audience target than heavy hitters like ARC Raiders. That said, given the positive initial reception, it could show steady retention and growth over time versus becoming a viral sensation.
