A new RTS game based on a renowned IP has entered the fray. Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, from Age of Darkness developer and publisher PlaySide, arrives next year.
The game was unveiled during the main event of Summer Game Fest 2025 with a CG trailer you can watch below, but we weren’t too excited until we saw the first official screenshots and learned more about it from its Steam page.
“Classic real-time strategy in the world of Westeros. Conquer the Seven Kingdoms solo, or in treacherous free-for-all multiplayer,” the first details tease. Indeed, this RTS will be traditional in its design, and we’re personally getting big Battle for Middle-earth vibes from it.
The game design’s focus will be on asymmetrical armies, with House Stark, House Targaryen, House Lannister, and even the Night King’s army of the dead available at launch. Each faction will have unique heroes, units, and mechanics. Hero abilities are teased as well.
Base-building and resource-gathering also seem to play a role in the loop, meaning War for Westeros won’t just focus on endless battles. Moreover, we’ve gotten a glimpse of a meta-map that includes ‘schemes’ and ‘connections’ on top of deployable units. This reminds us of, you guessed it, BFME’s War of the Ring mode.
We also know the game will feature single-player, co-op, and PvP online multiplayer modes. PlaySide is hitting the ground running with dev diaries on top of the reveal trailer, and you can watch the first of them right here.
