Ontos is Frictional Games’ next game. After SOMA, the studio had returned to the Amnesia franchise, but now, it’s jumping back into the sci-fi thriller arena with this mind-bending (and spooky) adventure. Here’s everything we know about it so far.
Based on what’s been revealed so far, we can also infer that Frictional wants to take things to the next level, both from a narrative and gameplay standpoint. The overarching level design is being described as “an interconnected labyrinth” and the gameplay has been designed to be more open-ended. If you want to get all the details, scroll down below.
Ontos Release Date
Ontos hasn’t locked a release date yet. However, we know it’s coming next year… unless a delay happens.
- Ontos release window: 2026
Ontos Story
While we’ve only received one trailer that runs under two minutes, Frictional Games has already shared plenty of details about Ontos’ story:
“From the creators of SOMA comes ONTOS, a sci-fi adventure that takes you to the edge of reality. You are Aditi Amani, invited to the repurposed moon hotel Samsara by the cryptic legacy of your estranged father, a brilliant mind-turned-prophet. What begins as a search for answers quickly spirals into something far stranger. Samsara is no ordinary outpost, but a place where reality fractures, where truths are buried beneath layers of deception and obscurity. As you delve deeper, guided by fragments of your father’s past, you must confront disturbing revelations about the nature of existence - and your place in it.”
Award-winning actor Stellan Skarsgård is playing a key role in the game, likely that of the protagonist’s father.
Ontos Gameplay
Frictional Games is known for its genuinely bone-chilling takes on the horror genre, but the studio’s first-person adventures are also special due to the dense atmospheres they’re able to create and the amount of puzzles and actual exploration that are as omnipresent as scares.
In Ontos, the player will be working through experiments and tests which test the limits of humanity. A focus on multiple solutions to each problem and player choice appears to be underlined in the information shared so far, but it remains to be seen how everything comes together. There’s been no talk of combat yet, but some bits of the trailer are looking tense, so maybe that aspect of the game simply hasn’t been unveiled.
Ontos Price and Platforms
Even though we’ve learned plenty of details about Ontos already, no price tag has been set yet. Expect updates on this front once a more specific release window (or date) has been established.
We do know, however, Ontos will launch on PC (Steam), PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. All platforms will be getting the game at the same time.
Ontos Trailers
Ontos’ reveal trailer, which is fully in-game, arrived during The Game Awards 2025, and it’s equal parts disturbing and intriguing. Of course, you also get to enjoy Stellan Skarsgård’s narration. Watch it here:
