Publisher Paradox Interactive has announced its decision to cancel several unannounced games, as it shifts focus towards “its proven game niches and projects that better meet the company’s requirements on returns and risk.”
The company has written down the value of these canceled projects, which will impact its Q3 2021 profit before tax with a decrease of 135 MSEK, roughly the equivalent of $5 million dollars. As previous financial reports show, Paradox Interactive has canceled other unannounced games over the course of the last year, amounting to a total of 265 MSEK in write-offs.
“Paradox Interactive was born and raised in strategy- and management games. It is where we have our heart and our mind and we are passionate about making games that our players can enjoy over a long period of time,” said CEO Fredrik Wester.
“Therefore we have sharpened our pipeline further to ensure that the projects with the highest potential have the resources necessary for the best possible development. We now have a promising game pipeline and I look forward to sharing these games with our players over the next few years.”
Following these cancelations, Paradox Interactive still has 15 games in development, a pool comprised of both new titles and sequels to existing properties, alongside several pieces of DLC. Four of the full titles have already been announced: Victoria 3, the console versions of Crusader Kings 3 and Shadowrun Trilogy, alongside the delayed Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2.
The publisher’s decision to refocus its efforts comes after former CEO Ebba Ljungerud exited the company last month.
During her time leading the company, Paradox Interactive continued to focus on its core franchises but also made a more determined push towards bringing its games to consoles and subscription services like Xbox Game Pass.
Last month, CEO Fredrik Wester announced that he will not be directly involved in the company’s handling of mistreatment cases following an incident from 2018, when he behaved inappropriately towards an employee during a company conference.
