The Expanse: Osiris Reborn’s release date brings us developer Owlcat Games’ first foray into third-person action RPGs, a departure from its regular output. Having built a reputation through its narrative-heavy cRPGs like Rogue Trader and Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, the studio is ready to try its hand at a more action-focused experience that, nonetheless still retains a large story focus.
Based on the popular The Expanse universe, the sci-fi action RPG explores a version of the 24th century in which humanity has conquered the cosmos. Stepping into the shoes of a Pinkwater Security mercenary, what should have been a brief shore leave on the asteroid Eros takes a wrong turn, thrusting is into “a solar system-wide conspiracy far beyond [our] control.”
The Expanse: Osiris Reborn Release Date
The Expanse: Osiris Reborn has yet to receive a firm release date. Although it is possible that we’ll get to play it at some point in 2026, a 2027 launch would also not be too surprising. Since this project tackles a different RPG subgenre, it could see developer Owlcat Games facing new challenges and taking more time to ensure the game is as polished as possible at launch.

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn Gameplay
Gameplay-wise, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn appears to use a formula inspired by subgenre titan Mass Effect. The action RPG allows us to customize our own mercenary, giving us three choices as far as backgrounds are concerned – Earther, Martian, or Belter.
Not only does it put is in command of “the most advanced ship in the whole of the solar system,” but it also sees us leading “a crew of highly-skilled specialists” while “facing off against escalating threats, political pressure, and a relentless enemy that will stop at nothing to see you dead.”
The decisions we make during The Expanse: Osiris Reborn’s story have lasting consequences. Furthermore, our companions “are more than just mission assets,” having their own histories, personalities, and goals. How we conduct ourselves determines whether or not our bonds strengthen or weaken.
As far as combat goes, Osiris Reborn relies on a third-person, cover-based system that blends gunplay with our characters’ abilities.
Two of our companions join us on missions, “while others will support from a distance: disabling systems or drawing the enemies’ attention.” We’ll also be able to give real-time commands that allow us to adapt to evolving, dynamic battles.
The title takes us to recognizable locations like Ganymede, Ceres, Mars, and Luna, as well as “ruined habitats and political strongholds mired in unease and tension.”
We’ll get to know the locals and what they’re going through, uncover secrets, and determined the direction in which things go based on the choices we make.
