Exactly as predicted by the rumors and leaks, the next Total War game will be adapting Warhammer 40,000 with a new engine and a layered take on the eternal conflict we’ve seen in other titles. Here’s everything we know about Total War: Warhammer 40,000.
Dawn of War IV isn’t the only massive RTS based on WH40K coming soon, and we couldn’t be happier. Despite some ups and downs, Creative Assembly’s take on Warhammer Fantasy has been amazing and deeply engrossing overall, and with all the new underlying technology being used for all future Total War games, chances are we’re looking at more robust entries from the get-go.
Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 Release Date
Despite the extensive first look at the game shared during The Game Awards 2025, developer Creative Assembly and Sega (publisher) haven’t talked of a release window yet.
- Total War: Warhammer 40,000 release window: TBD
Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 Story
We haven’t learned any specifics about Total War: Warhammer 40,000’s central narrative yet, but like in other Total War games, including the Warhammer trilogy, most of the storytelling comes from how the players choose to navigate highly replayable campaign setups.
The game will transport us to the Era Indomitus, that we know for sure. It’s often called the Age of the Dark Imperium, “the present period in the history of the Imperium of Man in the 41st Millennium.” The era began when Cadia fell at the hands of the forces of Chaos and the Great Rift was formed across the known galaxy. Space Marines, Orks, Aeldari, and Astra Militarum will be the four factions present at launch… unless Creative Assembly is saving army reveals for later.
Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 Gameplay
Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is sticking close to the Total War formula you know and love, fusing turn-based strategy and massive real-time battles with heavy tactical components. Commanding armies which are strategically deployed ahead of each battle’s start is not as easy as in other strategy games (real-time or turn-based); players must make good use of the units’ strengths and weaknesses as well as their unique abilities in order to push the enemies back without being crushing under their weight.
Above each planet, massive starships drop entire armies into battle. Outside of conflict, no time goes to waste, as robust strongholds must be built on conquered planets and entire battalions must be smartly customized and upgraded to prepare for later clashes. Meanwhile, you’re tasked with making cold turn-based decisions to better fortify entire sectors of space and/or advance deeper into enemy territory in an attempt to conquer their systems.
Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 Price and Platforms
Since we don’t even have a release window for Total War: Warhammer 40,000 yet, no price tags or pre-order details have been revealed yet.
We know, however, it’ll be the first Total War game reaching consoles. Total War: Warhammer 40,000 will launch into PC (Steam), PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 Trailers
