After yesterday’s news on Star Wars Eclipse’s development and Quantic Dream tackling an online multiplayer game next, it’s no secret many eyebrows were raised. Right after, we’ve received the first chunks of information and in-movement look at Spellcasters Chronicles, a mix of action and strategy tailored around 3-player teams.
According to the press release, the game’s development is almost done now. It’ll be “free-to-play and team-based,” and the company has set its live debut for October 17 (today) at TwitchCon San Diego, where it’ll be fully playable. A deep dive and presentation will be “broadcasted globally on the official Twitch LAN channel from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. PDT.”
Interested gamers can also start signing up for the upcoming closed beta tests via Steam or the dedicated page. For now, you can also watch its reveal teaser trailer below:
“Each match is played as a 3v3, fast paced 25-minutes showdown across mystical arenas of epic scale and verticality, where teams must capture altars to gain territory and destroy their opponents’ Lifestones to claim their victory,” the game’s description states. Before we get the chance to play it, we’re thinking of a new breed of MOBA game with a bigger emphasis on direct control over hordes of units versus pushing lanes that work on their own.
About the familiar hero-like characters, this is what we’ve been told: “Players will step into the fight as Spellcasters, archetype-driven mages with distinct identities, defined roles, and signature abilities, capable of summoning hordes of creatures and casting powerful spells.” It sounds enticing enough to warrant a closer look, but needless to say, we can’t shake the feeling of yet another single-player developer hastily shifting to a multiplayer live-service project which could end in disaster again. High-profile failures like Anthem, Redfall, or Marvel’s Avengers, among others, come to mind.
At the time of writing, Spellcasters Chronicles hasn’t confirmed a release on consoles.
