BlizzCon 2023 takes place over the weekend and Blizzard has confirmed its plans to reveal what’s next for World of Warcraft’s modern and Classic versions during the popular event.
WoW has always been an integral part of BlizzCon and there’s a good chance that, this year, we’ll learn more about the expansions set to come once Dragonflight’s story concludes and the Lich King is put to rest once more.
World of Warcraft BlizzCon 2023
The developer hasn’t provided specific details about its WoW-related announcements during BlizzCon 2023 prior to the event, but past editions and the MMORPG’s relatively steady content cadence point heavily towards imminent expansion announcements.
Since 2008, what we now know as modern (or retail) World of Warcraft has received new expansions every two years, each of them revealed one year prior, during BlizzCon.
Given how Dragonflight was released in 2022, and barring any unexpected schedule changes, we should get lots of juicy details about where our characters are headed to next.
With a bit of luck, Blizzard will share an overview about the new zones or continents we’ll visit in WoW’s next expansion, as well as upcoming systems changes and potential new races or classes.
The same thing is likely to happen for World of Warcraft Classic. Phase 4 went live in October 2023 and brought with it the Icecrown Citadel raid, which is where the climactic battle against the Lich King takes place, marking the expansion’s conclusion.
This means that BlizzCon 2023 is when Blizzard should confirm WoW Classic’s next major expansion. Unless plans have changed, we should revisit 2010’s Cataclysm, which notoriously reshaped a majority of zones in Azeroth.
It’s also possible that we’ll hear more about updates to WoW Classic Hardcore or potentially new experiments with the format.
One thing that won’t be coming back during BlizzCon 2023 is the in-person Q&A segment. Blizzard has, instead, opted to gather questions and answer them in a post-convention video.
The developer didn’t provide a reason for the change, but it may be trying to avoid a repeat of the now-infamous April Fools’ moment that happened after Diablo Immortal was revealed during 2018’s convention.
We only have a short wait before we’ll learn what’s next for World of Warcraft and WoW: Classic as BlizzCon 2023 kicks off on November 3.
